Cultivating Youth

THE CULTIVATING YOUTH PROGRAM

"I built confidence in myself because as I learned more from people, I learned about myself and how I've come to be this way. As I understand more about others, I find less boundaries between others and me, and my interactions with people are more comfortable. The workshops give us opportunities to understand others and to accept them and to be open-minded." --Cultivating Youth Program participant

In Thurston County, schools and youth agencies struggle to serve the growing number of diverse youth and the many learning and behavioral challenges they face. If not empowered, these youth slip through the cracks and become the faces behind our society's welfare, abuse, and crime statistics. GRuB has formed partnerships with local schools and youth agencies to serve youth who:
  • Come from low-income families, foster care, and/or group homes,
  • Have learning and behavior challenges including ADD, ADHD, drug abuse, and others,
  • Simply learn more effectively in a hands-on learning environment, and/or
  • Have other obstacles to reaching their potential.

While the youth actively work to pull themselves out of their own cycle of poverty, they are also reaching out to the community to help low-income families do the same. Each year, our youth build gardens for low-income people, grow food for low-income neighborhoods, educate their communities about sustainable agriculture, and network with other youth to find grassroots solutions to hunger and poverty.
