- Cultivating Youth Employment Program: our 10th and Largest Crew!
![[Photo] The 2008 Youth Crew](images/index/2008_crew.jpg)
- On June 26th, our 10th crew of local Thurston County teenagers began their work with our summer Cultivating Youth Employment Program. What better way to celebrate our 10th anniversary than by meeting our vision of serving more youth! We currently are employing our largest crew of young leaders which include 20 Summer Crewmembers, 4 Peer Crew Leaders, 2 Farm Assistants, and 1 Events & Office Assistant. In total, 27 youth are working on our farm and in the community to lead and promote efforts that bring good food to all people.
- Our summer has started off well. Our new crew is a focused team of teens who are indeed hardworking and compassionate. Our activities thus far have included food harvests for the community, leading volunteers in work at the farm, and a fieldtrip to the Kiwanis Food Bank Garden. For those interested in meeting our crew, feel free to stop by the farm on Wednesdays between 3 and 6pm to join them in the field, purchase food from our market stand, and/or join them for a farm tour.
- Volunteering at the Farm
- The Farm is open on Wednesdays & Sundays for volunteers to help out with various tasks. Wednesdays from 3-6 and Sundays from 1-4 pm all summer thru September 28th. You can just stop by if you're in the neighborhood; no sign-up necessary. Please join us!
- Veggies & Flowers from GRuB
-
- Our Bouquet & Vegetable CSA's are now officially full for the season (contact us about getting on the waiting list for next year), but our Farm Stand [map] is officially open for business! Stop by every Wednesday between 4-7 now through October 1 to get super fresh, local vegetables grown by GRuB youth. No need to worry about contaminated tomatoes or veggies that used a ton of extra gas to make their way across the country, you can get the good stuff right outside your own back door! The Handy Pantry continues to generously host our Farm Stand in a nice shady spot just around the corner from the store on Elliott Ave & Bing Ct. Come on by!
- GRuB's New Home is Nearing Completion
-
- As of June 19th, we have a roof over our heads, literally! Our crew from Polar Bear Construction, along with a great batch of subcontractors and volunteers, are making great progress on the new Farmhouse. There's still plenty of work to be done though and there are opportunities for you to become involved. Currently, we have a TON of beautiful, natural wood that needs oiling over the next couple of weeks, no experience necessary. There are also opportunities for skilled craftspeople to support us with finish work such as trim and flooring installation. Please contact Joseph Becker at ionecobuilding@gmail.com.

- GRuB's 2008 Graduation
and Garden Party -
- Another source of inspiration for us this month was our annual Graduation & Garden Party, held this past week on a beautiful, warm evening at the GRuB Farm. We shared an evening of fellowship and fabulous food and celebrated this year's Cultivating Youth graduating crew. We're so proud of the work they've put into themselves, the land they've farmed, and the community they live in, and we're privileged to have been a part of their growth. Thank you to all of the GRuB extended family members who were able to join us for this great event!
